Hong Kong: Works on paper

Some samples from a new series of works on paper inspired by my most recent trip to Hong Kong. These drawings are a basis for a comic, and that comic will be printed some day soon.
You will also soon be able to buy small works from my new etsy shop. I will post more on this when it is up and running.
These are mostly about food and also the weird feelings I cant describe that emerge when in Hong Kong. i think it is largely to do with the smells, and feeling like everything is at once faceless, but also full of incredible vibrant life. I miss it. It is also about someone that I know.

Jotta ran a project to make an ultra display for Matches this Christmas. Lucky for Suzanne's animal friends, I was asked to design a laser cut christmas gift. This design features the deer from my online mini comic 'Foraging Suzanne', and will be up over Christmas. To go and have a look for yourself get over to 34 High Street, Wimbledon.

I've just returned from time in Oslo. what a beautiful city. the blog has been quiet because I have had a computer draught, who knew that two could break in one year, and one arrive late only to be completely broken. hooray.

Looking Back...

I'm currently working on the Rivers of the World project for the Thames Festival. This is huge international project that 36 schools in London take part in, and then 36 schools internationally. I'm working with Shona Watt in 18/19 of those schools. The project involves us delivering a workshop that helps the students to make a super awesome piece of artwork. I then do some of the most crazy high pressure photoshop work in the classroom (kids are the most intense and amazing critics, I'll have you know). This results in their final piece of work being finished and lovely and print ready whilst we are still in the school. This whole process takes part over a day and a half. Phew.. Anyway, it's a great project and now the site is looking slick I want to show off some of the students work from last year...

So, I was asked to create some paper dioramas for the little cabinet gallery in the foyer front desk at the w+k offices in Hanbury Street, near Spitalfields. It was to be made to promote their awesome super in office Library. Im so happy with the result, and hopefully they are too! Thanks so much to Laura and Sophie Vent who got me in to do this. Here are the first snaps I took today. I think I'll have some pro pictures from the photographer there soon.

I have been very quiet on here, well for most of the year. But things have been happening. I haven't got much to show for it, but they have been happening. The next few months look quite busy, with anothe hook with Wieden + Kennedy looking like a possibility, some work in the show at the launch of the next issue of Aspidistra, and the unveiling of my first ever comic at the Alternative Press Fair at the end of the month. Things are still all plans, sweet sweet plans, so watch this space for some crazy ass stuff flying all over your way.

The Queen and I

I have had the odd experience of finding royalty where ever i go recently. To start with my home town of Wootton Bassett has been made royal. Which is an odd old thing to happen. Then following this I have had two illustration jobs directly relating to the queen. Which I cant divulge a lot of information about at the moment, but lets just say one involved some heavy photoshop, the other some heavy illustration/stop frame, time lapse. Really intense... odd and interesting. One day I will be able to show it off I am sure. Also had a looonnngg drive with my Dad to Cornwall and back yesterday. Serious aching limbs following that journey. I had an interview for MA Authorial Practise (Authorial illustration) which was really exciting, thoroughly enjoyed every second of it and the place is really very good too.

Exciting times??

I think i may be ok putting this image up from one of the Queen related projects, as this was a test image only and not used in any of the final material..

I have been working on some pattern work for a secret project for Roast books. I'm posting a few sneaky peeks of just a couple of the drawings that were used.. But the rest will have to wait for a while. I will also have a real life website again very soon thanks to a wonderful brother...soooonn very soon..

Upcoming are two projects that I am particularly excited about. One a childrens book which looks set to be epic and another illustrating Bella's writing for a rather exciting publication. As they say, watch this space. I'm going to get my drawing groove back!

The mixture is soft. I whisked it for longer than was suggested in A Good Housekeeping Guide. I folded in the flour with neat twists of my wrists, so as not to knock out the air. I even added a pinch extra of baking soda, just to make sure. This cake will rise. It was some trouble finding a tin large enough, for this will be a large cake; a big cake, but also a big surprise. The house is quiet, now that the beating is done. There is a hum from the oven, though I also hum. A thin tune, just a hum-hum. After I have poured the mix into the large tin, I take off my shoes and socks. The kitchen tiles are cold and tickle the soles of my feet. I remove my dress, knickers and socks and lay them on the chair. I am not so stupid as to forget to make arrangements for breathing. I have a straw that is long enough. Carefully I lower myself into the cake batter. It is pleasant, as it moulds itself to my skin, oozing carefully between my toes and then around my knees like a good sock, it squelches as I move into its embrace. There is a smell of vanilla as it creeps up nostrils. I must do this right and so I firmly pinch them closed, and breath deeply through the straw. I kneel here, somewhat awkwardly, though the thick mixture holds some of my weight. It is warming, a reaction between egg, flour, sugar, fat, binding and rising. I have time to think about the surprise, and what a surprise it shall be; me, emerging naked and beautiful from the golden glow of sponge. What a feast. A sprinkling of icing sugar, and I expect we shall laugh. Hands will be clapped over mouths in surprise, eyes wide with delight. What a delicious cake! Look how high it was risen! How long it must have taken you! What a surprise!

And I will say ‘Happy Birthday my dear. I love you.’ "

My friend Bella made this beautiful magazine and we all joined her for a brilliant launch night at The Bear in Camberwell. The show was put together immaculately and included some great spoken word and film, it shows that spoken word can be successfully incorporated into exhibition whilst being part of a print project at the same moment! That makes little sense ^ but it is true. I have been all over the shop recently and had some exciting outcomes because of this. Nothing to show yet but will soon have some work gracing some lovely clothing over at avalaan... AVALAAN.COM. Two of my designs will be used as injection pieces, one this summer.. one next. Very exciting indeed.

Im totally loving seeing The Argent Dawn splashed about everywhere.. and hence my handiwork too. Soon they will have a full page ad in Terrorizor,cant

I partook in some teaching experience last week at Camberwell College of Arts on the Illustration pathway of their foundation course. It was utterly amazing. I got a lot out of it and put a lot in and feel it went very well. Teaching is really a dreamy thing to do. So onwards with that part of my life!

In a week NEST will be debuting a the Alternative press fair so be prepared for some bloody lovely little self published gems. And following that I will start a new personal project involving porcelain.. i miss the porcelain too much. This time though.. things are going to get practical (as in you will be able to use the objects)

I think that is all for now folks.. no doubt i have forgotten something, made very little sense and been uninformative. We shall see..

Back to the future

I have been feeling lost in a sea of computer things so decided to concentrate on completley hand constructed illustration using ink and dip pen. I am thoroughly enjoying it and have tweaked a couple in a lo-fi way for a friends magazine, Aspiditra-magazine.blogspot.com. I shall see if they are used and incarnated in print in the future but here they are now for you to see. They are also a sneak at what my zine will have to offer in a couple of weeks.

Ceylan Projects and Sweet and Sound are pleased to present CARNIVALS, a residency curated by Aliina Astrova and Shane Connolly at Chapter One gallery.

"Another example used in contemporary philosophy is the idea of a carnival - when the established system of authority is suspended, but not from above, as in the case of emergency, which only reinforces sovereign power that suspends law in this way, but from below, when kids begin to harass adults and so on."

For this project the gallery has been opened up to a group of artists from different disciplines to use over the last week of January. The space then becomes a platform for these artists to work on their own projects, collaborate with others in the space, set up performances, screenings or readings, record music or play open jams; no limitations are set.

The residency will have no final exhibition. What the curators are interested in is the very process that lies behind creating work both on your own and in collaboration with other people, the kind of process that does not lead on to goals or fulfill expectations: “What we are trying to do with this project is to allow the creative process to be visceral and honest. It is interesting to see how people can create work for no particular reason, without an authority of a gallery or an exhibition organizer, just this big chaos. This will be a space full of creative activity where people can feed of each others' ideas, collaborate on set projects or just rip each other off.

The residency is open to public MON - FRI 11 - 7 and during evening events to be announced soon.

The closing ceremony will take place on the 29th of January at 6 PM."

On my recent trip to Hong Kong we spent a weekend on the mainland where we visited a beautiful old chinese garden built by a general, and a 2 300-500 year old villages that were just spectacular. Think the flickr account will be renewed for these. Here is a video of a lady singing a folk song traditional to that area. I cant remember the name of the style unfortunately but I do remember that it means 'male' or 'lower' voice.

This is a new thing I have started to attend. Talks about magic, folklore and forteana in South Eatst London and beyond. The place is full of historians and the like talking about exactly what i want to hear. The start of something beautiful for me I hope.

Last week was such an odd one. Very good though. Had a meeting with newest client from Roast Books. She was most lovely and am looking forward to this uber uber project I have with her. Also working on the project are Reena Makwana and Anna Lincoln. It's going to be pretty special. I am now just waiting in anticipation to hear from Pat and Trevor as I should be (fingers crossed) working on something with them for The Illustrated Ape magazine.. also sounds like a stonker of a project I want to get my molars into.

Also next up I must delve into the world ofAvebury and druids for Sweet and Sound.. Just finding the blooming time to fit it all in! HOOORAY THOUGH...

Today is the official day of me and jenny entering our new studio :) I cant wait to get it all lovely and gorgeous. Got myself a lovely little mini armchair/reading chair for down time. And will be right next to the river/borough market/tate modern. Lovely! Also got some new work in which will help pay the studio rent! Hooray for autumn. I really do love it.

I'm picking it up with wiriting again and started out with this little review for Sweet and Sound (sweetandsound.co.uk) Me and Hans wrote it together so it's a little ridiculous n a very good way... I hope. Next stop is a big ole article for next months issue. I'll be exploring the druids of Avebury for this one.

Watching Blood Ceremony and Electric Wizard is like attending a 1970's double feature in a smoked-filled grindhouse. On the bill would be 'Wicker Man' and 'Satanic Rites of Dracula' shown on repeat forever and forever.

Expectant of a garage band with sketchy flute use, Blood Ceremony blew me away with their pro

gressive metal. Heavily influenced by Black Widow and Sabbath, the seventies sound they produce works amazingly well for a modern band. You can tell they are totally sure of what they are doing, without a single single hint of cheesy "retro" or "vintage"!

Alla O'Brien (their front woman) is the ultimate eye catcher. Her voice soaked in Wicca evil ,suited in a tight green velvet dress and pentagram necklace, she is ready to kill! But don't let this divine creature distract you from Sean Kennedy's melodic riff journeys and Andrew Haust's primal drum flow. This alchemy of sounds and 'visuals' is accompanied by Alla's flute and Chris Landon's bluesy bass lines, to form a luscious environment for any black magic and in describable horror to be summoned.

As for Electric Wizard, strictly no beard stroking Wire readers here! They are for those amongst us that want to get high and ride with Satan. Following the gentle flow of Blood Ceremony's most righteous riffs, Wizard kicked our soggy brains into gear. As the show went on their huge sound and provocative stage presence melded into one beer drenched, sweaty rock out. These guys are rock stars, dirty satanic rock stars from Dorset. Platinum goddess guitarist, Liz Buckingham, plays seductively from behind her curtain of druid like hair. This, added to Jus Oborn's perfected front man stylings, lots of dry ice and spiral light show drops you right in the crotch of a psychedelic red neck.

Just to name a few of their signature anthems played that night: 'Satanic Rites Of Drugula', 'We Hate You' and 'Fruneralopolis'. No, I didn't mention 'Dopethrone' as it didn't make it onto the set list. Which was surprising as there was a perfect encore slot for them to complete our Wizard experience. Quite bummed out by that.

Was amazing to see a packed out venue. All hail the rise of metal wizardry.

Goblins, fairs and past love

Goblin at the Scala last monday as part of the Super Sonic Festival. Following the weekends festivities (which I missed) We went down to Goblin. Hans is truely super as he entered some competition and got me a free ticket.. hooray! It was an amazing experience. A prog jazz rock party with the films being screened behind them. Hearing the soundtrack to Susperia live was just god damn amazing. I loved it. The support were brilliant too, Miasma and the carousel of headless horses. With their black fedora's and otherwordly appearance and sound.

In other news I am once again amazingly proud of Hans as he did the visuals for invasion at KOKO. I didnt get to go but the photo's look great. Seeing his stuff so huge is exciting.

Finished up the week (after a brief trip to Bristol) with Field Day in Victoria Park. Getting to watch Mogwai rocked my socks off, completing my trilogy of Post Rock biggies (explosions and sigur ros are the other two... I know it's cheesey but i feel a little more complete now. Got to watch Final Fantasy.. that guy is just brilliant. Shame the sound at Field Day really is generally a bit rubbish. But when I got close enough to Mogwai it was ok. The small tents were fine. Rusko was kind of fun, a bit of standard dub step in the afternoon. That was the only real problem with having all that dubstep, it was just so early in the day. Scream on the main stage was just ODD. Im really tired now. Going to watch Anti Christ tonight.

I have been working on a new zine with Reena. Originally I wanted to put it into the lucky pdf stall at bart o rama this past monday. But I'm being a slow coach. I think it will be worth it though. I'm working on a series that will be based on a tribe of mystical creatures and their artefacts as they travel throughout the universe trying to collect jewels. Yes. Im still developing and putting the drawing in but here are some previews of the landscapes so far.

For the V&A late last Friday. They were to be animated alongside other scary v and a monsters but im not sure how it turned out because I have been really sick this week :( aw come on now all feel sorry! ha! Hope to find out soon though and maybe see some photo's. The idea was they look like shadow puppets when projected onto the walls and animated.
